In the United States, tipping is a common and expected part of dining out.

1. How Much to Tip

  • Standard tip: 15%–20% of the total bill.

  • For excellent service: 20% or more.

  • Some restaurants may automatically add a tip (called a gratuity) for large groups—check your bill.

2. When to Tip

  • Tips are given after the meal, when you receive the final bill.

  • The tip is not usually included in the menu prices, unless stated.

3. How to Tip

If paying by card:

  • The receipt will have a line for "Tip" and a total line.

  • Write the amount you want to tip, then sign the receipt.

If paying in cash:

  • You can leave the tip on the table, or hand it directly to the server.

4. Is It Optional?

Tipping is not legally required, but strongly expected.
Most servers rely on tips as part of their income.
